Finding the Right Shape for Your Dining Table

How do you know which table shape is right for you? It’s not just about favoring one shape over another. That’s not to say that your preference for one shape doesn’t matter, but there are a few other things to keep in mind.

The two main factors that determine the shape of the table should be the shape and size of the dining room or dining area and the number of people you usually sit around the table. You’ll find that certain shapes are better suited to certain conditions. When the two match, you create a process that makes your space look and function better.

Rectangular Dining Table

Rectangular table shapes are probably the most common, and for good reason. Most restaurants are also rectangular. A rectangular dining table is also suitable for more than four people, especially when you need to accommodate more guests, if it comes with extra leaves to extend the length.

Ideally, a rectangular table should be between 36 inches and 42 inches wide. Narrower rectangles are good for use in narrow rooms, but if the table is narrower than 36 inches, you may find it difficult to place utensils on the sides and leave enough space for the food on the table. If you do prefer narrow tables, you may want to consider placing food on a sideboard or buffet table so guests can buffet before they sit down.

Square Dining Table

A square room is best paired with a square dining table. If you don’t have a large group of people seated most of the time, a square dining table is also a good solution. When you need to accommodate more guests, a square table that can be spread out with leaves is perfect. Two square tables can even be combined to create a larger rectangular seating arrangement for special occasions.

One benefit of using square tables is that they can provide an intimate and satisfying seating solution for a small number of people. If there are only two or three people present at most meals, it can be unpleasant to have a large rectangular table – a larger table will make the space look cold.

Round Dining Table

Square tables aren’t the only solution for smaller or square rooms. Another possibility is the round dining table, which is one of the best shapes for small gatherings, since everyone can see the other person, the conversation is easier to carry out, and the environment feels more comfortable and intimate.

Keep in mind that round tables are not suitable for large gatherings. A large round table means that while you can still see other people, they appear far away, and you may have to shout across the table to be heard. In addition, most restaurants are not large enough to accommodate large round tables.

If you do prefer a round table to a rectangular one, and you think you may need to accommodate more people from time to time, consider purchasing a round table with an extension plate. This way, you can use the round table most of the time, but you can extend the round table time when a guest comes over.

Oval Dining Table

The oval dining table is very similar to the rectangular dining table in almost all its attributes. Visually, it seems to take up less space than a rectangle due to the rounded corners, but it also means that it has a smaller surface area. If your room is narrow or small, and you need to accommodate more people occasionally, you may want to consider an oval table.
